Bone Grafting/Sinus Lift
What is Sinus Lift/Bone Graft?
A sinus lift, also referred to as a sinus graft, is a procedure that involves surgically lifting the maxillary sinus to make sufficient space for new bone. A maxillary sinus is an empty area in the bones around the nose situated right above the rear part of the maxilla (top jaw). A sinus lift, as the name implies, lifts the sinus membrane and attaches a transplanted bone (the bone may be taken from the patient’s ribs, hips, or legs) to conduct the grafting. Through this surgical procedure, patients who require dental implants but have less bone density are able to have sufficient bone support which is needed for implants to be properly installed. Sinus augmentation is among the most generic surgical procedures of bone grafting.
Why Do People Need Sinus Lift/Bone Graft?
The main reason why some people require sinus augmentation is that some lack bone mass to be able to support a dental implant. There should be enough bone density in order for the implant to be properly installed and cause no issues in fusing into the jawbone. Bone loss usually happens due to the empty tooth sockets caused by tooth loss. By going through a sinus lift, the foundation from where the dental implant will be placed will be firm.
Sinus Lift/Bone Graft Procedure
The primary goal of a sinus lift procedure is to graft additional bone in the maxilla so that there’s enough bone density to support the implant.
This is achieved by cutting the gum tissue where the back tooth was before. The tissue is raised to expose the bone; this will open a small window in the bone. There is a membrane lining the sinus which can be found on the other side of the window. This membrane separates the sinus from the jaw. This membrane needs to be pushed up gently away from the jaw.
The bone materials are stuffed into the space vacated by the sinus, and are usually added above the jaw.
The cut gum will be stitched back and allowed to heal for about four to nine months. The more bones grafted, the longer healing time is needed. After that, the grafted bone will have meshed with the original bones. The dental implants are now ready to be put in place.
Benefits of Bone Graft/Sinus Lift
The procedure results in many benefits for the patient:
People with missing upper teeth have a thin wall separating the sinus and the mouth. The sinus lift will solve this problem.
- A foundation is created by sinus lift which can be used for dental implants.
- Sinus lift is a gentle and safe procedure.
- It reduces chances of any damage to the sinuses
- It strengthens the sinus wall
- Provides regrowth of new bone to replace any lost bone
- Creates space for new upper teeth
