FAQ for Dental Emergency
What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
Some dental emergencies need immediate dentist attention or urgent care while others can be treated on your next visit. It is important to know the difference between these two, especially when you’ve encountered a dental emergency outside of normal office hours.
Here is a list of urgent dental emergencies:
- Loose or knocked-out teeth
- Inflamed cheeks with a toothache
- Toothache that does not subdue
- Injured jaw
- Extreme or severe sensitive teeth
- Painful swelling
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, contact your dental expert as soon as possible.
Below are the minor dental emergencies:
- Dull toothache
- Broken or damaged retainer or night guard
- Lost bridges, crowns, or fillings
- A broken or cracked tooth
- Mild tooth sensitivity
If you think you have a non-urgent dental emergency, it is just as important to visit your dentist at the soonest possible time. Although these situations can let you go throughout your day without affecting your daily routine, you still need to let your dentist be aware of your current oral health as soon as you can.
Can the emergency room pull a tooth?
Only a dentist is allowed to conduct a tooth extraction. A non-dentist’s medical license can be revoked in some states if the non-dentist performs tooth extraction and result in medical malpractice. What an emergency room doctor can only do is temporarily alleviate the pain by prescribing antibiotics or pain relief medicines. Visiting your dentist is required to treat your problem.
What is the most common dental emergency?
Getting a tooth knocked out is the most common dental emergency. It usually occurs during an accident or when the patient is playing contact sports. Save your knocked-out tooth and maintain its moisture so Dr. Aarti Puri, DDS can reconnect it to your mouth.
What should I do if I have an emergency and can’t get a hold of my dentist?
There are a lot of things you can do to alleviate the pain or help your tooth survive until you visit your dentist. When in pain, you can take OTC pain medicines. When your mouth is inflamed, you can use salt water to wash off your mouth. Placing a cold compress on top of your swollen cheek can also effectively reduce the inflammation. If there is bleeding, place gauze or a clean cotton cloth on the part that is bleeding and apply pressure to the area by biting it down to stop the bleeding.
What if a tooth gets knocked out in an accident?
If your tooth has been knocked out, quickly preserve your tooth in a moisturized solution by placing it in milk or saline. This is because it's still possible for your dentist to be able to safely reattach it in your mouth. You have to take note that the tooth must be clean. You can also use milk or saline to clean out any dirt in the tooth. See your dentist as soon as you can as it will only need at least an hour to have the tooth successfully put back in your mouth. Do not use water to clean or soak the tooth as it can damage the cells in the roots. If milk or saline is not available, you can use your mouth to keep it moist. To reduce the risk of getting a knocked-out tooth, we recommend that you use a mouthguard.
