For the most part, dentists prefer to save natural teeth to maintain your smile’s natural symmetry and appearance. Sometimes, however, it’s necessary to have a tooth pulled to improve your oral health. In those instances, you can count on Dr. Aarti Puri from Newport Smiles in Newport Beach, California, for safe, comfortable tooth removal services. Here are some questions we’re often asked about tooth extraction treatment.
Dr. Puri may recommend extracting a tooth for the following reasons:
Tooth extraction shouldn’t be a cause for worry or concern. Although losing a tooth is sad, this procedure is fairly common and can be completed safely at our dental practice. Dr. Puri will start by numbing your mouth so you feel no pain during treatment. For simple extractions, we’ll wiggle your tooth with forceps to loosen it and pull it out.
Impacted wisdom teeth require surgical extraction, which entails making an incision in your gum and removing bone tissue to reach your teeth, then pulling them loose. Depending on the complexity of this procedure, we may put you to sleep for this treatment.
Yes, Dr. Puri will likely take X-rays to get a clear picture of the position of your tooth, its current condition, and the depth of its roots. This helps us determine the best method for having your tooth removed.
Once your tooth is removed, a blood clot will form at the extraction site to aid with the healing process. After the anesthesia wears off, you’ll likely experience gum soreness, swelling, and pain for a few days. Dr. Puri can prescribe pain medication, or you can take OTC medication to ease these symptoms. Gargling with warm salt water and applying cold compresses to your cheek can also help ease your discomfort.
Don’t drink from a straw after your procedure, as it can dislodge the blood clot and disrupt your healing. Eat only soft foods for several days to avoid painful chewing. Nourishing foods like soup, puréed vegetables, yogurt, mashed potatoes, rice, etc., will help your body heal quicker. Avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks during your recovery. Rest as much as possible for the first few days to give your body a chance to heal. Within a few days, you should be feeling better and be able to resume your normal activities.
