What is laser dentistry?

Lasers are a time-tested technology used for many medical procedures for many years. For instance, you may be familiar with LASIK laser-assisted treatment for vision correction. At the dentist’s office, Dr. Puri, utilizes lasers as a way to treat many different conditions. Lasers are popular in dental and medical field because they eliminate or minimize many drawbacks of conventional techniques and treatments. So, our patients stay comfortable during treatment (so relaxed that local anesthetic may not be necessary), and natural and speedy healing is encouraged afterward.

How do lasers work?

Generally, Dr. Puri points and activates the handheld laser device toward the damaged tissues or areas that require treatment. The light energy from the laser also generates heat. This process works wonders on diseased or damaged tissue; it may be used to eradicate bacteria from the spaces between the gums and teeth. Lasers can even be used to reshape or remove tissues.

How do lasers compare to “conventional” treatments?

Traditionally, dentists have used scalpels and other dental instruments (such as the drill) to remove or otherwise alter oral tissues. These approaches may be associated with discomfort, bleeding, prolonged recovery, and healing time afterward. With laser-assisted therapies, no device touches the tissue or treatment sites. This makes for a very gentle process that minimizes the risk of pain and other side effects or complications during and after treatment. Lasers can also highly target the area that needs to be treated. This means treatment is incredibly conservative or tissue-preserving – only damaged tissues are treated. Healthy regions outside of the treatment sites remain intact.

What are some other benefits?

Since the process is so gentle, our friends with dental fear or anxiety stay calm and at ease – a benefit that is further promoted because we do not need to use common “triggers” of fear. For example, patients’ fears may be triggered when they see a cutting tool like a scalpel or hear the sound of a dental drill. Dr. Puri has created a “safe space” for those who might otherwise avoid the dentist. The nature of laser-assisted therapy also means we can treat more in less time for the most efficient and convenient experience at our office in Newport Beach, California. So, you spend less time in the treatment chair and more time enjoying what makes you smile.
