A screening that could save your life:

FAQs about detecting and preventing oral cancers

When you hear “dental checkup,” oral cancer screening is unlikely to be the first thing to come to mind. You likely consider exams to check for tooth decay or cleanings to keep your gumline in shape. But, the screening aspect of your visit to Newport Smiles in Newport Beach is vitally important. And these screenings do save lives.

Oral Cancer Screening Newport Beach, CA

What is oral cancer?

These cancers affect the mouth (oral cavity) and the oropharynx, the part of the mouth at the back of the throat. The latter cancers are characterized as “pharyngeal.” In California, more than 10 out of every 100,000 people will be diagnosed with these particular cancers.

Why is screening important?

Cancers are generally easier to successfully “cure” when diagnosed and treated early at the localized stage or before it has spread to other parts of the face, head, lymph nodes, and body. The more the cancer is allowed to spread, the harder it is to treat effectively and without potentially aggressive measures. Screenings courtesy of the team you know and trust play a crucial role in monitoring these potentially deadly growths. With ongoing screenings, Dr. Aarti Puri can catch and address these anomalies before they threaten oral and overall health.

How do you screen for cancer?

During your regular exams and cleanings, we will not only take a peek inside of your mouth. However, we will also look for potential red flags by touch. We feel for any lumps, bumps, masses, and swelling on the neck and underneath the chin and ears. Likewise, we are looking for similar swelling and lumps inside the mouth. Other potential trouble signs include white or red, patchy discoloration, and sores that never seem to heal fully or are recurrent. We may also ask you about changes that provide more clues about your mouth and throat health. It’s important to share any persistent difficulties you have had with chewing, swallowing, or speech or if you have had frequent conditions like a sore throat. As needed, a small tissue sample may be removed for further evaluation.
